To Mumps or not to Mumps

We’ve seen a few cases of adult mumps in recent weeks and I thought it would be apt to touch on the virus, the clinical symptoms and signs and how we prevent it (or in the case of certain people – refuse to prevent it)
Mumps is a viral infection of mainly the parotid glands. These are the main saliva producers on the side of your face (just under your ears).
For more information check out the very informative site of Mayo Clinic :http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/mumps/basics/definition/con-20019914

My main reason for writing this piece to make sure that people understand the need for immunisations. Mumps vaccine is (almost) compulsory in the South African vaccine system. Like most medical interventions, no one can actually force anyone to have an vaccine and it is well documented what the consequences can be. The UK has now had three major mumps outbreaks, after the country lost herd immunity.
There was very dubious research by a Dr. Wakefield about a link between autism and Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. This was published in the authoritive Lancet magazine. It has since been retracted. The scare of parents made them not vaccinate their children and lose herd immunity as described above. It is important to note that not all people will have life long immunity against these virusses.

With the recent little spike we’ve seen, I guess my message is to vaccinate your child. I love a piece by Penn and Teller about vaccinations. It is brash, but it brings a message home.
